We can lead the horse to water. We can’t make it drink.
Here’s a hot take from a social media agency:
📢 We are not responsible for your entire sales funnel. 📢
We said what we said.
Before anyone comes for us with a spreadsheet full of ROI calculations, let’s be clear. Of course we want your business to make money. We want the leads, appointments, purchases, and paying customers just as much as you do.
But…
Getting someone interested in your business and getting someone to hand over their credit card are two different jobs. Somewhere along the way, businesses started expecting their social media manager to do both.
Let’s clear that up.
Your Instagram Is Not Your Entire Sales Funnel
The customer journey doesn’t begin and end with a post. A typical funnel looks like this:
Awareness: Someone discovers your business exists.
Interest: Something catches their attention, and they want to know more.
Consideration: They research, compare, and decide whether you’re worth their money.
Conversion: They book, purchase, or sign the contract.
Retention: They come back, leave a review, or refer a friend.
Social media can influence every stage. Its biggest strength, especially organically, is building awareness, interest, and trust.
Influencing the funnel and controlling the funnel are two very different things. That’s where expectations get blurry.
What Your Social Media Agency IS Responsible For
When you hire Mac Made Creative, you’re hiring a team to put your business in front of the right people. That means building:
Strategy: Understanding your goals, audience, competitors, and industry.
Content: Reels, graphics, photography, and captions people actually want to consume.
Brand positioning: Making your business recognizable, relevant, and memorable.
Storytelling: Turning your expertise and personality into something people connect with.
Consistency: Keeping you visible, not just when you have something to sell.
Calls to action: Giving interested people a clear next step.
Analytics: Measuring performance and adjusting accordingly.
We’re not just deciding what looks cute on your grid. That fifteen-second reel? Behind it are hours of research, scripting, filming, editing, and revisions. Every post has a reason.
Our job is to build the foundation that supports your sales, not to control every step after someone discovers you.
What Your Social Media Agency Is NOT Responsible For
We only handle social media marketing, so we don’t control:
Your pricing: Whether customers think you’re worth what you charge.
Your products or services: The actual quality of what you’re selling.
Your website: How fast it loads, how easy it is to navigate, and whether it converts.
Your booking process: How easy it is to schedule or buy.
Your response time: How quickly your team answers calls, emails, and DMs.
Your follow-up: Whether anyone reaches back out to a potential customer.
Your customer experience: What happens once someone walks through your door.
These things happen inside your business, not on your social media. Every one of them decides whether someone becomes a paying customer.
We Can Lead the Horse to Water. Is There Even Water?
Say we create a reel that gets 20,000 views. Not random views from halfway around the world, but real people in your market who could become customers.
They watch, share, visit your profile, and click your website. Some even message you asking how to book.
Then:
Your website takes forever to load.
Your booking link doesn’t work.
Your pricing isn’t clear.
Nobody answers the phone.
Your team doesn’t know about the promotion we’re advertising.
Someone submits an inquiry and never hears back.
When the appointments don’t fill, the question becomes: “Why isn’t our social media working?”
From where we’re standing, it did. We got them interested. We got them to take action. We walked them right up to the front door.
You’re the one who has to open it.
A Lead Is Not a Sale
A lead is someone who has raised their hand. They might have:
Sent a DM asking about availability.
Filled out a contact form.
Requested a quote.
Called to ask about your services.
Started booking an appointment.
A sale is when that interest turns into an actual transaction. A whole lot can happen between those two moments.
Marketing generates demand and qualified leads. Sales converts that interest into paying customers.
The two should work together, but they are not the same job.
If your social media is bringing in inquiries that aren’t converting, the question isn’t whether your marketing works. It’s where you’re losing people after they say “I’m interested.”
Not Every Post Is Supposed to Sell
Organic social media isn’t just a place to advertise your latest special. It’s where people get to know you. It’s how we:
Build awareness with people who don’t know you exist yet.
Establish credibility by showing your expertise instead of claiming it.
Build trust so potential customers feel confident choosing you.
Stay top of mind so people remember you when they’re ready to buy.
Expecting one post to convert a stranger is like proposing on the first date. Sure, it could happen. It usually just makes things awkward.
Think about the businesses you follow. You don’t buy something every time they post. You might follow a restaurant for months before making a reservation, a Pilates studio before booking your first class, or a surgeon for a year before scheduling a consultation.
That’s not a failure to convert. That’s dating. That’s how relationships are built.
Storytelling is intentionally not selling, and it makes selling a whole lot easier.
Is Your Social Media Agency Responsible for Generating Sales?
Yes, We’re Accountable. Just Not for Every Result
We’re not suggesting agencies should post whatever they want, collect a retainer, and shrug when someone asks about ROI.
Absolutely not.
We should always be able to explain:
What we’re trying to accomplish.
Who we’re trying to reach.
How the content is performing.
What we’re changing when something isn’t working.
Social media gives us far more insight than a billboard on I-10 ever could.
We can track reach, engagement, profile visits, website clicks, and which messages actually land.
Instagram Insights still can’t tell us whether someone booked after visiting your site, whether a phone call became a sale, or whether your team followed up. More visibility into the customer journey doesn’t mean control over it.
One viral reel isn’t a strategy. One slow month isn’t proof your marketing failed.
Sometimes the Problem Isn’t Your Marketing
Another hot take: social media can’t fix every business problem.
If people are coming in but not converting, the answer isn’t automatically more content.
It might be:
A better website.
A simpler booking process.
Faster response times.
Real follow-up.
A more compelling offer.
A better customer experience.
Maybe the strategy needs work, too. We’re not above that conversation. You have to name the real problem before you can solve it.
Social media is not a Band-Aid for a broken business model.
Our Job vs. Your Job
Our job is to get your business in front of the right people, give them a reason to stop scrolling, build trust, and hand them a clear next step.
Your job is to be ready when they show up.
We can lead the horse to water…
… make that water look pretty damn appealing…
… and even point the horse straight to it…
But we can’t make it drink.
If the trough is empty? That’s a whole different problem.
